Tucker made her debut in 1972 at age 13 on both the Pop/Rock and Country charts with her powerful and soulful country rendition of the Helen Reddy smash, "Delta Dawn," which made the Country Top 10. As her star rose over the ensuing decade, she became one of very few women to be identified with the outlaw country movement of that era with her signature powerful vocals, mature song themes, and "tough girl" image. Her next major career break came in the early 1970s while she was still in her preteens when one of her demo tapes got the attention of songwriter Dolores Fuller who sent the tape to producer Billy Sherrill, then head of A&R at CBS Records, who, in turn, signed Tucker to Columbia Records.
In 1969, Tucker's family relocated near Las Vegas where she became a regular performer. The precocious entertainer began singing as a child at various local events and caught the eye of Mel Tillis who was so impressed that he invited her to perform alongside him onstage. Born in Seminole, Texas, she spent much of her early childhood in Willcox, Arizona.
